Membership
The health information management professional is qualified to manage individual health records and aggregate data. This is due to a unique combination of knowledge and skills in health care databases, medical classification systems, flow of clinical information, medico legal issues, uses of health information and data security systems.
Members hold many diverse roles, yet all share a common purpose: providing reliable and valid information that drives the healthcare industry. They are specialists in administering information systems, managing medical records, and coding information for reimbursement and research. Health information management professionals are uniquely qualified to:
- Ensure health information is complete and available to legitimate users
- Code and classify data for reimbursement
- Analyze information necessary for decision support
- Protect patient privacy and provide information security
- Enhance the quality and uses for data within healthcare
- Administer health information computer systems
- Comply with standards and regulations regarding health information
- Prepare health data for accreditation surveys
- Analyze clinical data for research and public policy
Becoming An OHIMA Member:
There are no separate state dues to belong to OHIMA. Active members of the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) who reside in Ohio are automatically members of OHIMA. If you are an active AHIMA but do not live in Ohio, you may contact AHIMA to choose Ohio and OHIMA as your state association.
If you are not currently an AHIMA member and would like to join, complete the AHIMA Membership Form on the AHIMA website and indicate Ohio as your state association to enjoy OHIMA member benefits.
Updating Your OHIMA Member Info:
If you are currently an OHIMA member and need to update your e-mail or mailing address, you need to Update Your Profile via AHIMA's website. Please do not submit your e-mail or address changes to OHIMA since we do not maintain a separate mailing list from AHIMA.
