HIPAA Security Preparedness for HIM

November 12, 2004
Confluence Park Restaurant - Columbus, Ohio

  PROGRAM SUMMARY
If you had to assist your organization to comply with the HIPAA Privacy Rule, then you must also know how to comply with the HIPAA Security Rule. The Security Rule is designed to protect the integrity, confidentiality and availability of electronic patient information against security threats, improper use and disclosure, and illegitmate access. The compliance deadline for this Rule is not until next April, but don't let the date fool you. Much preparation needs to be done now in understanding and implementing HIPAA's stringent standards.

  WHO SHOULD ATTEND
All health information managers, compliance officers, and consultants needing to understand the HIPAA Security Rule, and how to bring their organizations into compliance.

HIPAA Security -- Making HIM Work
      Matt Curtin, CISSP, IAM
      Founder and CEO, Interhack Corporation
      Columbus, Ohio

HIM professionals have a new ally in their efforts to manage health information effectively: the HIPAA Security Rule. Information security is often misunderstood as a technical problem focused on issues like firewalls and anti-virus systems, when it is really a tool for organizations to understand how to achieve their missions in the face of threat. The HIPAA Security Rule correctly begins with a definition and assessment of risk, which allows each organization to decide for itself how best to implement the remainder of the Security Rule. Health information managers are now presented with a unique opportunity to look at what information is in their care and how best to deliver it, all while providing appropriate confidentiality, integrity, and availability.

      11:30 am - 12:30 pm

      Bobby Grizzard

Identity theft is one of the fastest growing crimes in the United States. It occurs when one person’s identification (which can include name, social security number, or any account number) is used or transferred by another person for unlawful activities. Detective Grizzrd will help you understand what identity theft is, how it happens, how to protect yourself, and what steps to take if your identity is stolen.

      2:00 pm - 4:00 pm
