Course Description:
Introduction & Implementation of ICD-10-CM

Developed June, 2002 - January 2004

SUMMARY

A new, more accurate clinical code set known as the International Classification of Diseases, 10th Revision has been recommended by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services National Committee on Vital Health Statistics' subcommittee on standards and security .

Speaking before the subcommittee, Nelly Leon-Chisen, American Hospital Association director, coding and classification, said accurate and precise reporting of clinical codes is important because the codes are crucial to benchmarking, quality assessment, research, public health reporting and strategic planning, in addition to accurate reimbursement. She said that the International Classification of Diseases, 9th Revision is rapidly becoming outdated. Chisen said the ICD 10th Revision represents significant improvements, although training and computer upgrades will present cost challenges to hospitals. A final implementation date set for October 2005.

This course will clarify the differences between ICD-9-CM and ICD-10-CM and delineate what you need to do right now in order to begin preparing for implementation of ICD-10-CM. Remember it is never too early to prepare, you'll be glad you did!

A new chapter has been added to this course entitled "The Latest on ICD-10-CM" to provide important updated information.
