MEMBERSHIP MEETING MINUTES

September 20, 2005

 

The Membership Meeting was held at Sinclair Community College, Building 12, 1st Floor on September 20, 2005. President, Julie Hamiel, RHIT called the meeting to order at 5: 33 p.m.

 

President’s Report:

 

Our President, Julie Hamiel, RHIT called the meeting to order and gave her report for the upcoming 2005-2006 year. The duties for both the Fall and Spring Seminars have been combined and Co-Directors of these activities are Deborah Dyer, RHIT for Fall and Claudia Potts, RHIT for Spring.

 

Treasurer’s Report:

 

Georgia Overholser, RHIT, reported the current cash and CD balance. The CD matured and will be rolled over. Any questions regarding finances and the treasury balance should be directed to Georgia.

 

Advisory:

 

Julie Hamiel, RHIT informed us that OHIMA nominations of the upcoming ballot are open. Please take a few minutes to inform your colleagues about this matter. Information regarding nominations and the upcoming election can be found on the OHIMA website. Julie also informed us of the OHIMA Fall Coding Seminar to be held September 30, 2005 in Columbus, Ohio at the Confluence Park Restaurant. The theme is the Influence of Coding on the Revenue Cycle, for more information and to register go the OHIMA website and click on the flying banner.

 

Advocacy:

 

Kathy Gibson, RHIT, gave us information from the OHIMA website under legislative updates concerning Disaster Management and Recovery in light of the recent hurricanes that have affected certain parts of the country. The Department of Health and Human Services issued a Sept. 2 bulletin on HIPAA privacy and disclosures in emergency situations. The bulletin emphasizes how the HIPAA privacy rule allows patient information to be shared to assist in disaster relief efforts and to assist patients in receiving the care they need. The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality has issued a new report, “Use of Former (Shuttered) Hospitals,” to give emergency responders and public health officials tools for opening shuttered hospitals when an emergency  is under way. On another note, CMS announced that beginning Oct. 1, CMS will stop processing electronic Medicare payment claims that are not HIPAA compliant. Financial:

 

Georgia Overholser, RHIT had no additional financial information to report.

 

 

Education - Fall Seminar:

 

Deborah Dyer, RHIT announced that the Fall Seminar is scheduled for Friday, November 4, 2005 and the Holiday Inn, Dayton Mall 31 Prestige Plaza. Deborah has also called for available members to help fold, stuff, lick, and stick, reminders to mail out about the seminar. If available the date is Thursday September 27, 2005 at 4p.m. Please contact Deborah for more information concerning these events or if you have questions.

 

Leadership:

 

Susan Plake, RHIT has no new information to add.

 

Communication:

 

Chanda A. Caffey had no new information concerning communication.

 

Professional Imaging/Networking:

 

Janice White, RHIT, CTR reported that she has been working with Amy Dotts from OHIMA in updating the MVHIMA Webpage on the OHIMA.org Website. The calendar link will continue to be updated as more information on the MVHIMA meeting dates and times become available. Janice stressed the importance of reviewing the MVHIMA Bylaws, which were recently posted to the MVHIMA regional Webpage on the OHIMA.org website by Julie Hamiel, RHIT with the assistance of Amy Dotts. Membership:

 

Jennifer Cameron gave us updates on our membership enrollment, including active and student memberships. We have also been informed that the MVHIMA will continue to pay student dues for local membership in support of our Sinclair HIM students. Students will be responsible for paying their own membership dues in OHIMA and AHIMA.

 

Sinclair Student Liaison:

 

Chandra Fyke announced the enrollment of the first and second year students, many in attendance tonight. We have also been informed that Jan Kelly has resigned as chair of the Sinclair HIM program. Barbara Wallace is now the acting interim chair person. Barb has informed us that there is a tenure track faculty position open at Sinclair for anyone interested. Mary Dudash-White announced that Vickie Spearman and Teresa Marling were each awarded FORE Scholarships from AHIMA, congratulations to them both.

 

New Business:

 

Cheryl Gregg Fahrenholz, RHIA, CCS-P is joining us tonight, from OHIMA to speak on the proposal of a dues increase and a bylaws amendment. There is also a proposed Revision to Standards for Initial Certification of the American Health Information Management Association.  Please see the OHIMA website for more information on these important issues as they stand to affect us all. Cheryl informed us that the OHIMA board is interested in our comments and views so please take the time inform yourself on the issues and to become involved in your association.
