As artificial intelligence continues to expand across healthcare, coding professionals are finding themselves at the center of a rapidly evolving landscape. From computer-assisted coding to autonomous coding technologies, AI is changing how coding work is performed - but not eliminating the need for skilled professionals. This session will explore the current and future impact of AI on coding, including differences in adoption across healthcare organizations, the growing importance of oversight and validation, and the critical role coders play in ensuring accuracy, compliance, and data integrity. Attendees will gain insight into how coding roles are evolving and what skills will be essential for success in the future workforce.

Open, Closed, Excision, Resection, or Bypass? Demystifying ICD-10-PCS for Abdominal Procedures

Leigh Poland, RHIA, CCS, CDIP, CIC
VP Coding Services
AGS Health
Abdominal surgeries often present some of the most complex ICD-10-PCS coding challenges. Is the procedure a resection or an excision? Is an exploratory laparotomy separately reportable? When does a lysis of adhesions qualify as a coded procedure? This session breaks down the complexities of coding abdominal surgeries and provides clarity on PCS root operations, approach, and key documentation requirements. We'll walk through common general surgery procedures, including appendectomies, bowel resections, exploratory laparotomies, and drain placements, with a focus on coding decision points that frequently create inconsistency between coding, CDI, and audit teams. Through case-based examples, attendees will learn to apply PCS logic more accurately while identifying missed coding opportunities and documentation gaps to help ensure compliant query and provider education strategies.
