Accurate coding is crucial for proper reimbursement and compliance in the healthcare industry. This session, "Think Like an Auditor: Catch Common Coding Mistakes Before They Are Made," is designed to help healthcare and coding professionals identify and prevent common coding errors. Frequent mistakes will be discussed, such as incorrect modifier use, unbundling, upcoding, downcoding, diagnosis linkage, outdated codes, and more. This fast-paced session aims to equip coders, billers, managers, and providers with awareness and knowledge to enhance coding accuracy, reduce denials, and ensure coding compliance.

Mastering Burn Care Coding and Documentation: Coding for Inpatient Burn Injuries (ICD-10-CM/PCS/CPT)
Leigh Poland, RHIA, CCS, CDIP, CIC
VP of Coding Services
AGS Health
Each year in the U.S., burn injuries result in more than 500,000 hospital emergency visits and approximately 50,000 acute admissions. Early intervention is vital to the overall survivability and outcome of burn patients. Over the past 50 years, there have been significant improvements in the assessment and treatment of burn patients. The prevalence of burns continues to pose a challenge to healthcare systems, emphasizing the importance of continuous education and training for healthcare professionals in the latest burn care practices and coding standards. This one-hour presentation will cover burn anatomy/pathophysiology, coding issues related to selecting the correct diagnosis for the type and severity of burns, and the correct PCS code(s) for reconstruction of the burn site. There are a variety of regenerative skin grafts now available, and we will review the correct code selection associated with these.

Hospital Payer Clinical and Coding Denials . . . Ups and Downs
Gloryanne Bryant, RHIA, CDIP, CCS, CCDS
HIM Coding & CDI Compliance Consultant
Self-Employed
Payer denials continue to significantly impact Hospital Revenue Cycle. Within the inpatient setting we see more and more diagnosis denials for Clinical and Coding reasons. Documentation remains are the center of many inpatient denials. Even with the electronic health record there are STILL gaps and holes in the clinical documentation. Clinical criteria and even medical coding is not always black and white. Payers are using AI and algorithms to enhance and narrow the focus for specific diagnoses being denied. Hospitals need to be more proactive rather than reactive to address, and solve the issue of hospital inpatient denials, especially for Sepsis, Acute Respiratory Failure, Acute Renal Failure and even Morbid Obesity. There certainly can be ups and downs to improve appeals and processes to improve for success.
